Study Shows Intracellular Glutathione Increase in Two Weeks

In spite of the growing evidence in support of glutathione supplementation, there are very few studies available that have confirmed supplements are effective at increasing the level of glutathione within the body’s cells where it is needed to perform the multitude of roles as the body’s most prevalent anti-oxidant.

Most studies on the subject don’t actually measure glutathione, instead measuring oxidation markers and with mixed results. For those studies that do look at glutathione levels, most are not measuring intracellularly, where glutathione actually does its work. If plasma levels increase but it’s not getting into the cells, what’s the point in supplementing?

Studies on precursors of glutathione production, namely N-acetylcysteine (NAC) or Cysteine have shown promising effects, however the results are mixed as it seems to increase levels in some people but not others. This could be due to the health, age, diet and genetics of the individual.

As most people supplementing with glutathione are doing so because of existing health concerns, relying on the mechanics of healthy biochemistry to turn precursors into increased glutathione levels could be a less than optimal approach for many.

A peer-reviewed, published study conducted by Penn State University on a liposomal glutathione formula (Tri-Fortify®, produced by Researched Nutritionals) generated compelling data on glutathione absorption, immune cell impact and oxidation.

Glutathione levels were measured in 12 subjects at two weeks in both plasma and within red blood cells, which increased 28% and 25% respectively (P < 0.05).

Most of the increase was already prevalent at one week. This is the only study we know of to date that has shown statistically significant increases across a study group so quickly.

The study also measured natural killer cell function, which increased 400% at two weeks. Natural killer cells are the immune system’s first defense against malignant/abnormal cells, viruses and bacteria.

Lipid peroxidation decreased by 25% with Tri-Fortify®. Reduced oxidation is an expected benefit of glutathione supplementation, however some studies on other formulations failed to show this effect.

The proprietary formula, which did label testing to 24 months showing it is highly stable without refrigeration, is only available through physicians. It can be used as a stand-alone supplement or in combination with IV therapy to maintain stable glutathione levels.
